Unemployed Help Centre of Windsor

PROGRAM NAME: Community Kitchen Plentiful Harvest Food Rescue Program

Website: http://www.uhc.ca

Primary Need: Food Security and Nutrition

Description: The Community Kitchen will be used as a clean room to proportionally repackage fresh and prepared foods, fruits and vegetables, and meats that have been collected for community distribution. The kitchen will also be used to preserve these goods through canning, vacuum sealing, and dehydration. The kitchen will offer free cooking lessons as well as workshops on shopping tips to save individuals and their families money, understand nutritional facts on labels, to teach what basic foods to have on hand, and keeping and handling food safely for healthy living. At the rear of the UHC’s building there is a Community Garden with provisions for 180 garden plots so families have the opportunity to plant and harvest their own fruits and vegetables. These families will have the opportunity to utilize the Community Kitchen to preserve some of the produce grown in their garden for the winter season.
